The Shopfront Studio artist-in-residence invites a selected South Australian artist to inhabit our Shopfront Studio (once a workers’ cooperative bank at the Waterside Workers Hall) for a year, developing their own projects as well as engaging in a range of discursive and creative tasks with Vitalstatistix.

In 2020 our artist-in-residence is writer, critic and Walkley award winning journalist Jane Howard. Jane is currently deputy editor of arts and culture at The Conversation and a regular contributor to Kill Your Darlings and Guardian Australia. Her work has appeared in publications including RealTime, Meanjin, The Lifted Brow, Crikey, Junkee, and The Stage. Her artistic work explores writing in collaborative digital spaces.

Over the course of the year Jane will use the studio to develop new experimental writing and curatorial projects (drawing on crowd sourced projects she has previously undertaken with Vitalstatistix for Adhocracy in 2019 and with our close collaborators Performance & Art Development Agency in 2015); she will run a series of criticism and writing workshops for South Australian emerging critics; and she will co-lead a series of talks and panels connected to our artistic program with Vitalstatisix director Emma Webb, including salons for our community of artists and audiences.
