Vitalstatistix is announcing the temporary closure of its home, the heritage-listed Waterside Workers Hall, following advice from the building’s owner, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, that remediation works are required to parts of the theatre infrastructure.

Vitalstatistix was informed in July that these works are necessary to ensure the building meets compliance requirements As a result, normal operations, venue bookings, and public programming are disrupted for the remainder of 2026. At this stage, a completion date for the works has not been confirmed.

We recognise that the short notice of this closure will be disappointing and disruptive for artists, audiences, venue hirers and our broader community. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this period.

The Department of the Premier and Cabinet has advised that it will work to progress the remediation works as quickly as possible, with the aim of returning the theatre to normal operations at the earliest opportunity.

Impact on Adhocracy and 2026 programming

The closure means that the much-anticipated return of Adhocracy, Vitalstatistix’s national hothouse for experimental art and contemporary performance, will not proceed as planned in 2026.

Vitalstatistix has contacted all applicants to advise them of the cancellation and is working with the artists whose projects were selected to explore pathways for the ongoing development of their work. These projects will be announced soon, alongside other events that audiences can look forward to in 2027.

While the company works with artists, partners, hirers and stakeholders to reshape activity over the coming months, we will pause new venue bookings until there is clarity on the reopening timeline.

“We are grateful for the support and understanding of our artists, audiences, hirers, partners and community,” Jennifer Greer Holmes, Artistic Director / CEO of Vitalstatistix said. “We will continue to share updates as information becomes available and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Waterside Workers Hall.”
