King’s Choice is a new performance work that interrogates the fairy tale protagonist of the prince, through a critique of the 16th century instruction guide for new princes and royals, ‘The Prince’ by Niccolo Machiavelli. It explores what it means to challenge authority to become your true self.
The project is drawn from sound and performance artist Rebecca Riggs-Bennett’s fantastical imaginings as a young person, their adult movements through the world as genderfluid, and their embracement of coming out, cultivated through physical endurance. With nonbinary, anti-disciplinary artist and writer Daley Rangi, and performing artist and choreographer Indira Storm, the team will use Adhocracy to explore masculinity, power, decolonial practices, queer utopias and futurity, alongside the movement, text, sound, and design possibilities of this new work.
