Not Very Berry is a new solo performance work, an intimate montage of words, music, dance, and participation, that tells a fiction meet semi-autobiographical story of a Filipino Australian gay man’s journey spanning the mid 1980s to now. It begins with a dance class that soon explodes into a personal deep dive into growing up, coming out, finding one’s place and encountering ghosts.
This work is partly inspired by a fascination with a folk dance from the Philippines called Tinikling (Bamboo Dance) which originated in the Spanish colonial era, from a punishment practice used against plantation workers. During Adhocracy, theatre maker, choreographer and community activist Roman Berry, will use the movement of Tinikling – stepping in, jumping, hopping, and turning – to develop the structure of the piece, remarkably his first ever solo performance.
