Do you enjoy singing?
Are you interested in using your voice as an experimental instrument?
Are you interested in joining a temporary choir in July for an exciting and important project?
Vitalstatistix are creating a temporary choir for a project that is spending creative development time with us in July. Speechless, by artist Cat Hope and produced by Tura New Music, is an experimental opera paying homage to those rendered speechless through political means.
Speechless draws its thematic material from Gillian Triggs’ 2014 Human Rights Commission report entitled ‘The Forgotten Children: National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention’.
Cat Hope is channeling a new and personal Australian gothic representation of the silencing of children, the silencing of dissent and the seemingly ubiquitous compassion fatigue of many Australians. This residency brings together many of her collaborating artists to test out her material.
We are looking for participants to join a choir who will perform alongside soloists and a bass orchestra (bass guitars, bass brass, bass drums and electronics). The choir will perform wordless music, in the style of a ‘shouting choir’. This is an opportunity to be part of a two-week artistic residency/workshop process with some amazing artists at the forefront of experimental music in Australia.
We are seeking participants of all abilities and backgrounds, you do not have to be a trained vocalist. The time commitment spans 17-29 July at Vitalstatistix’s venue Waterside, in Port Adelaide.
Time commitment: You will need to be available for workshops and rehearsals on Monday 17 July (evening), the weekend of 22 and 23 July, Tuesday 25 July (evening), Thursday 27 July (evening) and for public work-in-progress performances of Speechless on Friday 28 July and Sat 29 July (evenings). A detailed schedule will be provided once you have been selected. The full schedule can be found here.
