MISH GRIGOR, SJ NORMAN AND SARAH RODIGARI

 

MISH GRIGOR is an artist whose work investigates the relationships between popular entertainment and experimental art practices. She enjoys moments of great theatricality placed very close to the absolutely mundane, and has an ongoing fascination with new writing for performance.

Mish is one third of the collaboration POST, formed in 2003, with Zoe Coombs Marr and Natalie Rose. Straddling live art, theatre and contemporary performance practices, POST are described as ‘hybrid’, but prefer ‘genre-queer’. They have deep irreverence for the institution of theatre and a deep reverence for the magic moment of liveness it houses. Recent projects include Oedipus Schmoedipus (Sydney Festival/Belvoir) and Who’s The Best? (Sydney Theatre Company) which toured nationally and internationally. They are currently developing We Are The World through Cambridge Junction, In Between Time(UK), Country Arts SA and Sandpit (AUS).

Mish’s recent solo work has included The Talk, originally commissioned as part of Field Theory’s ‘Site is Set’ in 2015, and presented with Proximity Festival, Metro Arts and Performance Space’s Liveworks; RAMBLE, developed through Punctum’s Seedpod residency program; and Man O Man, presented with Arts House, Melbourne, and Vitalstatistix, Adelaide. Mish has been a co-director of the Quarterbred ARI, Imperial Panda and Tiny Stadiums, curatorial advisor for Next Wave and Underbelly.

SJ NORMAN is a cross-disciplinary artist and writer.  Their work traverses performance, installation, sculpture, text, video and sound. Live performance remains the core of their practice: working with extended duration, task-based, and endurance practices, as well as intimate/one-to-one frameworks, Norman’s primary medium is the body: the body as a spectacle of truth and a theatre of fantasy; a siphon of personal and collective memory; an organism with which we are infinitely familiar and eternally estranged; a site which is equally loaded and empty of meaning, where histories, narratives, desires and discourses converge and collapse.

Norman has toured, exhibited, performed and spoken about their work internationally and in Australia, including Venice International Performance Week (IT), Spill Festival of Live Art (UK), Fierce Festival (UK), In Between Time (UK), Arnolfini (UK), Performance Space, Sydney (AU, Next Wave (AU) and the Australian Experimental Art Foundation (AU), Edinburgh Festival (UK) and Brisbane International Festival (AU), Melbourne Festival (AU), Dancehouse (AU), Tarnanthi Festival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art (AU)  and Tate Modern (UK).

A proud Indigenous Australian of both Wiradjuri and European heritage, they grew up in Sydney and regional NSW. They have lived in the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany, and currently divide their time between Berlin and regional NSW.

SARAH RODIGARI is an artist whose work is an ongoing practice of wrong reading. Continually ‘off-script’, Rodigari seeks to elaborate the gap between the performative and the social, between gestures and their categorisation, through site-specific performances and encounters. Often minor in scale and poetic in address, her work encompasses a variety of shifting forms and modes, from endurance actions, to one-on-one contractual performances, and text-based works. As such, through strategies of humility, absurdity and contradiction, Rodigari seeks to both render visible the given conditions of her labour — the common sense that prevails, or the ‘script’ as such — and the potential for this script to be otherwise. Thus within Rodigari’s work, ‘wrong’ becomes contested and contingent — perhaps resistance, perhaps critique, or something else all together.

Working between visual art, performance and social practice, Rodigari has worked with and within various contexts and institutions. These include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Melbourne International Arts Festival, South Project (Indonesia), PACT Zollverein (Germany), Centre for Contemporary Art Glasgow, The National Review of Live Art (UK), Anti-Contemporary Arts Festival (Finland), and SOMA (Mexico City).

Rodigari has a BA (Hons) in Sociology (UNSW), a Masters in Fine Art (RMIT) and is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Art at the University of Wollongong.
